1. Maomao — The Apothecary Diaries

Putting Maomao at number one almost feels like the boring choice now. Which is probably a sign that she belongs here.

She has none of the usual ingredients of an anime character engineered to dominate popularity polls. No giant sword. No tragic demon living inside her. No increasingly ridiculous sequence of power upgrades. Half the time, she would rather be left alone with a suspicious jar of medicine.

Maomao still ends up owning most of the scenes she’s in. She’s sharp, dryly funny and far too curious for her own good, which is usually what gets her into trouble in the first place. Her reactions to Jinshi remain one of the great running jokes of the series.

The wider fandom seems to agree. Maomao won Best Main Character at the 2026 Anime Awards, confirming how strongly her precise, unconventional personality connected with viewers.

There are louder characters on this list. There probably isn't a more complete one right now.

2. Frieren — Frieren: Beyond Journey's End

Frieren sleeps in, gets distracted by completely useless spells and rarely seems impressed by much of anything. She’s also somehow become one of anime’s biggest characters.

Season 2 put her back in front of everyone in 2026, but that’s not really why people like her. She can be absurdly powerful when she needs to be, but the big moments aren’t the whole appeal. That’s just not the main reason people got attached to her.

The good stuff happens in between.

A flower reminds her of Himmel. A conversation from eighty years ago suddenly means something different. She notices, usually much later than everyone else, that all those supposedly insignificant human moments have accumulated into a life.

There is something unusually patient about the way Frieren is written, and fans have been patient with her in return.

Also, the mimic chests still get her every time.

3. Subaru Natsuki — Re:ZERO Season 4

Subaru is frustrating. He is embarrassed. He makes decisions that make you want to pause the episode and walk around the room for a minute.

Good.

That has always been the point.

Re returned in force in 2026, and Subaru topped Anime Corner's Spring 2026 male character poll. The series has kept that momentum through the summer, too.

What separates Subaru from an endless supply of isekai protagonists is that the story rarely lets him enjoy being the protagonist. Return by Death sounds like an unbeatable cheat until you remember that he still has to experience every death, every failure and every version of events nobody else remembers.

Watching him get stronger has never really meant watching a number go up.

It means watching someone get better at surviving himself.

4. Johnny Joestar — JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run

For years, Steel Ball Run was the JoJo part manga readers would bring up with that slightly annoying look that said, “Just wait.”

Now everyone else finally gets to meet him. Johnny Joestar made his anime debut in 2026, and he doesn’t feel much like the JoJos before him. He used to be a jockey, can’t use his legs at the start of the story, and is still pretty angry about what happened to him. He’s also not entering the Steel Ball Run for some heroic reason. Saving the world is very much not the plan.

His relationship with Gyro is a big part of why the story works, but Johnny himself is fascinating because he starts from such an ugly emotional place. There is ambition there, desperation, envy and a willingness to make choices that a cleaner shonen hero probably wouldn't.

The first stage of the anime is already out, with more arriving in September.

Johnny probably isn’t staying this low on the list for long.

5. Emilia — Re:ZERO Season 4

There was a time when talking about Emilia inevitably turned into talking about Subaru.

That feels increasingly outdated.

Emilia topped Anime Corner's Spring 2026 female character poll, while Emilia and Subaru also performed strongly together in seasonal voting.

More importantly, she has simply become a much stronger character than the almost impossibly good, distant figure introduced at the beginning of Re.

She's still kind. She's still idealistic. But neither quality feels passive anymore.

The later story gives Emilia decisions to make, pressure to carry and considerably more room to exist outside Subaru's obsession with saving her. It’s made their relationship much more interesting too. This time, it actually feels like both of them are trying.

6. Sung Jinwoo — Solo Leveling

Subtle? Absolutely not. Fun? Very much yes.

Sung Jinwoo is one of the purest examples of why a power fantasy can be satisfying when everybody involved commits to the bit. You meet him as the weakest hunter around. Then the leveling begins, the wardrobe improves dramatically, and before long entering a room has basically become a special effect.

The appeal isn't mysterious.

Sometimes you want complicated emotional damage and moral ambiguity. Sometimes you just want to watch Sung Jinwoo turn up and embarrass everyone who thought he wasn’t worth worrying about.

Solo Leveling was still everywhere at the 2026 Anime Awards, with Jinwoo nominated for Best Main Character. And the fandom clearly hasn’t got bored of him yet. People are still making edits, clips and fan art of him constantly.

7. Ichigo Kurosaki — Bleach

Ichigo has been around since 2001, but somehow he still keeps ending up back in the middle of the anime conversation.

A lot of that comes down to the final stretch of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, which also makes it one of the biggest returning titles in our Summer 2026 anime release calendar.

Of course, nostalgia helps. People have known Ichigo for more than two decades. It would be silly to pretend otherwise.

But nostalgia alone does not keep a character relevant for twenty-five years.

Ichigo's design still works. His fights still work. And compared with many shonen protagonists, his personality has aged surprisingly well. He never really wanted to become the greatest anything. Most of his story begins with a much simpler instinct: somebody he cares about is in danger, so now it's his problem.

Somehow, that’s been enough to keep him popular for years.

8. Katsuki Bakugo — My Hero Academia

Bakugo winning Best Supporting Character at the 2026 Anime Awards felt pretty deserved. My Hero Academia fans had been saying it for years anyway.

Early Bakugo is almost impressively unpleasant. Loud, arrogant, furious at everyone and particularly horrible to Deku. The easy version of his character would have stayed that way while occasionally getting a cool fight.

Instead, he changes.

Not instantly, and not in a conveniently inspirational straight line. He eventually has to reckon with what all that obsession with strength has done to him, and with the way he’s treated the people around him. By the final season, he’s a long way from the kid we met in episode one.

You do not have to like him. Plenty of people still don't.

But you can’t really ignore him.

9. Monkey D. Luffy — One Piece

You can’t really make a list like this without Luffy.

One Piece has been around long enough that some fans now have kids of their own. Somehow, that hasn’t made Luffy feel any less current. Even people who’ve never watched the whole thing know the straw hat, the grin, and exactly how serious he gets when food is involved.

The remarkable part is that he hasn't been flattened into a mascot along the way.

There is still something fundamentally appealing about a protagonist whose answer to increasingly complicated political systems is essentially: “Are my friends okay? No? Then we're fighting.”

10. Yuji Itadori — Jujutsu Kaisen

Yuji used to be pretty easy to sum up. Nice guy. Ridiculous physical ability. Eats a cursed finger. Very bad day follows.

By 2026, that description feels almost cruel.

The latest Jujutsu Kaisen arc puts Yuji under a very different kind of pressure than he faced at the beginning of the series. This is someone who has spent a huge portion of the story being forced to live with consequences he did not entirely cause but cannot convince himself aren't his responsibility.

That makes him less breezy than early Yuji.

It makes him more interesting too. Jujutsu Kaisen has plenty of characters who get more attention than Yuji, but he never feels secondary in his own story.

11. Qifrey — Witch Hat Atelier

If you had never read Witch Hat Atelier before 2026, there is a decent chance Qifrey caught your attention very quickly.

He finished near the top of Anime Corner's Spring 2026 male character ranking.

We could pretend the appeal is difficult to explain, but look at him.

Beyond the obvious, though, Qifrey works because Witch Hat Atelier doesn't leave him as the standard warm, infinitely patient fantasy mentor. He clearly loves teaching Coco. He also clearly has secrets, personal motives and parts of himself he would rather his students never see.

That little bit of danger under all the kindness does a lot of work. Manga readers knew.

12. Coco — Witch Hat Atelier

Coco came remarkably close to the top of the Spring 2026 female character polls, which is quite an entrance for a new anime heroine.

People don’t only get attached to characters who are sarcastic, jaded or hiding some ridiculous power. She’s a good example of that.

Coco is excited about magic.

She gets embarrassingly excited when she learns something new. Witch Hat Atelier doesn’t rush past that. It actually lets her be curious for a while.

That enthusiasm could have become exhausting in a lesser show.

Here, it's contagious.
