You can find thousands of male characters on general AI platforms, but that does not automatically make them good for BL-style romance. A good BL chat needs more than two attractive fictional men. It needs tension, continuity, character chemistry and enough memory for a relationship to feel like a route rather than a sequence of unrelated prompts.

So for this update, we narrowed the field to six apps that approach that problem in very different ways: KUN, Character.AI, PolyBuzz, Talkie, Kindroid and Nomi.

Some give you enormous public character libraries. Some expect you to build the companion yourself. KUN takes the opposite approach and starts with original anime characters, romance and continuing story routes already built into the experience.

You can choose a character and enter a route without first designing a boyfriend, searching through thousands of public bots or explaining the entire relationship in a prompt. KUN's current store descriptions explicitly position the product around anime boyfriends, interactive romance, memory and stories that continue from previous conversations.

That does not make it the best app for every type of AI roleplay.

Character.AI has by far the broadest public character ecosystem and unlimited free messaging. Nomi and Kindroid are stronger if you want to construct one highly customized long-term companion yourself. PolyBuzz and Talkie are good at fast, visual character discovery, but their public content policies and monetization make them less predictable choices for BL romance that moves beyond light flirting.

1. KUN — Best for BL Anime Romance Without Building Everything Yourself

KUN has the clearest advantage in this comparison if the search itself is literally BL AI chat.

KUN's current description explicitly describes anime AI boyfriends, romantic storylines, open-ended roleplay and conversations that remember previous chats and important moments.

That narrower focus is useful for BL-style roleplay. If you want rivals who slowly stop acting like rivals, a protective character who remembers why you were upset three conversations ago, or a route that can move from teasing to an actual story arc, you are already in the right genre.

KUN also combines chat with story routes, rather than treating narrative as something the user has to manufacture entirely through prompting. The product direction is explicitly built around memory, voice and branching story continuity.

The trade-off is obvious: there are fewer characters.

Character.AI and PolyBuzz can give you an almost endless feed. KUN deliberately cannot. If your favorite part of AI chat is opening twenty new bots in an evening, that smaller catalog will feel restrictive.

If you would rather stay with one character and see where the relationship goes, the same limitation becomes an advantage. There is much less setup between opening the app and getting into an anime-romance route.

Nomi also supports multiple companions and group chats, which opens up more complicated roleplay structures than a simple one-on-one boyfriend chat. Paid users get voice chat as well.

So why isn't it #1 for BL? Because almost all of the BL layer is still your job. Nomi gives you an impressive relationship engine. It does not give you an anime-BL world, curated male character routes or a visual-novel-like journey out of the box. If you enjoy designing the boyfriend, writing backstory and shaping the dynamic yourself, that freedom is excellent. If you came looking for an anime character and wanted the story to start tonight, it is more work than KUN.

3. Kindroid — Best for Power Users Who Want to Build the Character

The app lets you define detailed backstories and key memories instead of hoping the model eventually guesses the relationship you want. Its paid architecture is also unusually explicit about memory: Standard, Ultra and MAX progressively increase conversation context, cascaded memory, recalled long-term memories and backstory space.

For BL roleplay, that means you can build almost exactly the relationship archetype you want. Free users currently have access to Kindroid's Lite model. Kindroid shortened its premium trial from seven days to three days in February 2026; the company has also publicly discussed changing its indefinite free-tier model, so the exact free structure is worth checking again if you are reading this later in the year.

Kindroid's weakness for our specific use case is not capability. It is friction. You can make a very good BL companion in Kindroid. You just have to make him.

4. Character.AI — Best for Finding Almost Any Character Type for Free

Character.AI remains difficult to beat on sheer choice. In September 2026 Character.AI also introduced c.ai lite at $4.99/month, sitting between free and the $9.99 c.ai+ plan. Lite adds a daily allowance of premium chat styles, better memory and fewer ads; ordinary messaging remains unlimited after those premium messages run out. For BL, that makes it a very easy place to experiment.

Search for almost any trope and someone has probably made something adjacent to it. You can also create your own character rather than relying on public ones. The problem is that variety and suitability are not the same thing.

User-created characters vary enormously in writing quality and setup. More importantly for romance, Character.AI explicitly says pornographic content is not supported, and its policies prohibit graphic or specific descriptions of sexual acts. That does not prevent romantic BL roleplay, but it does put a fairly clear ceiling on where some adult routes can go.

The other difference is structural. Character.AI is a huge AI-character platform that can be used for BL. KUN is an anime-romance product where that mood is much closer to the starting point. If you care most about free unlimited chat and enormous variety, Character.AI is difficult to argue with. If you want a more curated romance journey with less searching, it feels much broader than necessary.

5. PolyBuzz — Best for Scrolling

PolyBuzz is much closer to a character marketplace. Open it when you do not know exactly what you want and the app is very good at giving you options. That makes it good for discovering BL-adjacent archetypes quickly.

You can bounce between characters until the tone clicks rather than spending twenty minutes constructing one.

The monetization is considerably more layered than KUN or Character.AI, though. PolyBuzz promotes free character conversations, but its public pages do not give a clean numeric daily free-message limit. Recent App Store feedback also mentions ad-gated continuation, so we would describe the free tier as free/ad-supported rather than promise unlimited frictionless chat.

There is also an important content-policy trade-off. PolyBuzz's current Terms prohibit pornography and sexual acts, including requests for sexual activity.

So it works better for character discovery, flirting and lighter roleplay than for users specifically choosing an app because they want fewer interruptions in an adult romance route.

6. Talkie — Best Visual Playground

Its current product is built around discovery, creation, visual character experiences and voice. The public website has dedicated Anime & Game, Fantasy, Original and other discovery categories, and its voice product lets users speak with characters rather than staying entirely in text.

Talkie's own FAQ lists Talkie+ at $9.99/month. Its Terms also explicitly define a free-use program, although they do not publish a simple numerical message allowance.

For light BL roleplay, there is plenty to explore. But current Google Play reviews also contain complaints about innocuous messages triggering “Please change your topic,” although those are individual user reports rather than proof that every conversation behaves that way.

Talkie therefore makes much more sense as a visual character playground than as our first recommendation for an ongoing BL romance.

How We Compare BL AI Chat Apps

We use the same questions for every app.

First, how much work does it take to reach a believable male/male romance route? An app gets less credit if you have to build the entire personality, relationship history and tone before the first useful conversation.

Second, does the relationship retain context? We look for explicit memory features, persistent backstory or other systems designed to carry details forward.

Third, can the character sustain roleplay rather than simply answer messages? BL works particularly badly when every reply feels like a generic assistant wearing a character avatar.

Fourth, we look at voice, images and other media, because romance-oriented companion apps increasingly extend beyond text.

Fifth, we compare what a free user can actually do and what meaningful features require payment.

Finally, we check content restrictions. BL does not have to mean explicit content, but romance becomes frustrating when even ordinary attraction, kissing or suggestive dialogue repeatedly collides with a platform's moderation system.
